Somme revisited

14th July '14

Last week we visited the Somme and gave ourselves the task of laying crosses on as many Rutland graves as possible as well as on the Thiepval and Pozieres memorials. 95 soldiers were rememembered this way, driving nearly 500 kilometres around northern France to find them all. Over the next few days we’ll be posting pictures of their graves or their names carved on the appropriate memorial. We were pleased to learn that students from Uppingham Community College had also visited the Western Front last week and had used this website to prepare for their trip. That is a real thrill for us, to know that the site is proving useful and interesting to young people on a journey of discovery to the battlefields.
