Welcome to Rutlander 601

19th May '14

Today we were contacted by the relatives of another soldier killed in the First World War and until now not known and not commemorated outside his family. Hugh Steele grew up in Exton, one of three brothers who fought. According to his family he predicted his own death to his younger sister on his last leave home. He died at the very start of the Battle of the Somme along with four other men from Rutland. He is not remembered on any war memorial in Rutland, nor in Rutland and the Great War but we are proud to remember him here alongside the other 600 men and women from this county who served and didn’t return. And we hope to have a photograph of him soon. Many thanks to Ken Plant of Stamford for telling us about him. Hugh was his late wife’s uncle. This is what this site is all about. Please do contact us too if you know of anyone else who deserves to be remembered here. We can be contacted at info@rutlandremembers.org.
