PICKERING Albert James

Known information

Albert James Pickering and his older brother John both died in the First World War. They were two of eight children of Charles and Jane Pickering. Albert was born at Wing in 1896 and was a butcher before the war. He enlisted on 5 November 1914 and joined the 2/5th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment but never served abroad. Albert died from sickness at Dunstable Hospital on 18 July 1915. He is buried in Luton Church Burial Ground where his headstone has the simple inscription 'At Rest.' He is remembered on the war memorial inside the church at Wing along with his brother. Albert was 19 years old.

Albert's grave reference is Z.Z.II and can be found by following the main path from the cemetery entrance. The path bears sharp left and then there is a grass path on the right leading up to the Cross of Sacrifice. From there, bear left up the slope for 50 metres and Albert's grave is on the right.
