TOWELL John Thomas

Known information

John Thomas Towell served for eight years in the Royal Garrison Artillery before emigrating to Canada. He was the son of  William and Annie Towell of Empingham and born in the village in 1874. On his attestation paper he described himself as a labourer. He joined the Canadian Engineers on 27 September 1915 and was killed seven months later on 15 April 1916. John is buried at Reningheist New Military Cemetery, grave I.C.13, and is remembered on Empingham's war memorial.

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
