MILLS Robert Lucas

Known information

Robert Lucas-Mills served in the Northumberland Fusiliers as Robert Mills and died in October 1917. He was born in Barwell, Leicestershire, the son of Robert Lucas-Mills and Sarah Ann Wood. He lived in Hinckley and worked in the shoe trade before moving to Greetham. Greetham and the Great War states a B Mills was mentioned in the Grantham Journal as one of the first Greetham men to enlist and serve King and Country. Robert is buried at Bucquoy Road Cemetery near Arras, grave II H 5 and is remembered on Greetham's war memorial. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission originally recorded his date of death as 2 October 1917, but his headstone has 3 October.

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
