PACEY Ernest

Known information

We do not known much about Ernest Pacey. He was the son of Frank and Annie Pacey, of Ryhall Heath, Stamford, and had been born in Swaton in Lincolnshire but the family then moved to Rutland. Ernest enlisted at Oakham and served in the depot Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment and probably did not go abroad. We do not know how he died but he is buried in the churchyard in Ryhall, along with three other villagers who died during their service in the First World War.

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
