Known information

Henry Francis and his brother Tom both died in the First World War. Henry is buried in Ryhall Cemetery, grave 108, his brother in France. They were the sons of Ephraim Francis, of The Square, Ryhall, where Henry was born on 30 March 1895. He was a farm labourer and enlisted on 4 January 1915. He served in France with the 2nd Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment from 30 September that year until 14 February 1916. Henry was discharged from the Army on 28 April 1916 suffering from tuberculosis and died at Ryhall on 10 September. His death certificate gave the cause of death as phthisis [TB] and exhaustion. It also gives his age as 20, as does the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Henry is remembered on Ryhall's war memorial.

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
