ORGILL John Henry

Known information

John Henry Orgill was the landlord running the Three Horse Shoes pub in Market Overton before the war. He lived there with his wife and three children. He was born in Markfield in Leicestershire in 1880. John joined the 1st Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment on 21 September 1916, and went out to France on 10 January 1917 taking part in the Third Battle of Ypres (Paschendaele). John was taken prisoner on 18 April 1918, and died on 29 October 1918, just two weeks before the end of the war, in the Reserve Hospital II Hammonia, at Aachen. He is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, grave XIII.G.19, and remembered on Market Overton's war memorial. He was 38.

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November.
