CARTER Wellesley George

Known information

Private Wellesley George Carter was born in Wiltshire, the son of George and Bertha Carter who later moved to Kettering. He worked as a plumber and before the First World War was in business with his brother at Wing. He joined the 7th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment early in the war, enlisting in Oakham, and died from wounds received in action on 25 September 1915. He was described as a bright, happy young man, and was immensely popular with everyone. He is buried in France in Beauval Communal Cemetery, grave C.18, and is remembered on the war memorial at St Peter and St Paul Church in Wing.

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November.
