About

A very pretty little cemetery near Arras, set at the back of a housing estate and well worth a visit. As well as Lyonel Jacobson MC there are two other particularly interesting graves. One is of 2nd Lieutenant I. ap R Owen of the Royal Flying Corps whose gravestone says he was shot down over that area single-handedly engaging five enemy aircraft. The other is of Charles Kirman who was shot at dawn for desertion. When we visited, there was a poignant family inscription in the visitors' book detailing how he had fought and been wounded in many battles, and asking: "Who was the enemy?"

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
