5 images The Hampshire Regiment was composed of 34 Battalions at the commencement of the 1st World War in 1914, comprising :- 3 battalions of Regular Army, 19 of the Territorial Force, 7 of the "New Armies", and 5 battalions of Other Troops. A total of 28600 men are included on the database of the WW1 Hampshire Regt. records, 7580 men were listed as dead or missing. Private John William Bentham of the 2nd/5th (Territorial ) Battalion was killed in Palestine in March 1918, either at the Battle of Tell' Asur or the Battle of Berukin.In Winchester Cathedral, below the West window, there are 2 brass plaques commemorating the Regiment . In the right hand side of the Nave looking towards the choir/altar, there are 3 Books of Remembrance in computerised form, in which you can find the name of any person who served.
