5 images With the assistance of my SatNav, I was able to find Aldershot Military Cemetery after leaving the M3 motorway at Junction 4 and travelling along A331 and A325 to Government Road and Gallwey Road, where the entrance is located adjacent to the Chapel. I had earlier downloaded a Plan of the cemetery from the Commonwealth War Graves website and a Grave ref. AF 1783 for Private Arthur Atterton DOLBY of the Leicestershire Regiment. This is a very large cemetery, but I was able to find the Area AF which is situated on a hillside overlooked by a memorial cross. However, the plot number 1783 is not marked on the headstone, but I found the plot after some diligent searching. The cemetery is kept in wonderful condition by the CWGC.

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
