About

Deal Cemetery is a sprawling municipal cemetery containing war graves of both world wars. The 127 First World War burials are scattered throughout the cemetery grounds and many bear witness to the town's connections with the Royal Marines and the sea. Of the 54 Second World War graves, 38 form a small war graves plot in Plot C. The plot also contains the graves of three German airman and there is one Belgian war grave elsewhere in the cemetery.

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme.
