About

This cemetery is really the extension of the communal cemetery. The 46th (North Midland) Division took over the extension with this part of the line in March 1916. Successive divisions used the French military tramway to bring their dead in from the front line trenches and, from the first row to the last, burials were made almost exactly in the order of date of death. Plots V and VI contain the graves of men killed in the capture of Vimy Ridge in April 1917. The cemetery was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield.

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
