About

There is a stone memorial inside the church to the five men of South Luffenham who died in the First World War. One of them, Wilfred Spring is buried in the nearby cemetery. There is also a very fine scroll recording the names of all the men who served. Vicar's son Julian Richards also has his own memorial, erected by "his sorrowing colleagues and friends in the Post Office service." Two names are absent from the main memorial, George Holmes and Harold Holmes. We have not yet established whether they were related to each other. George died at sea and there is a memorial stone in the churchyard erected to his memory. It is now leaning against one of the boundary walls. Harold is buried in France. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission records show he was "a native of South Luffenham" but is commemorated in the church at Braceborough, Lincolnshire.

Do you know something about South Luffenham War Memorial (St Mary the Virgin Church) that hasn't been mentioned?

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
