About

Bully-Grenay is the name of the railway station serving this village and Grenay. The French Extension was made by French troops on the west side of the cemetery, and Commonwealth forces, who took their place in this part of the line in June 1915, buried in it until June 1916. The British Extension was begun at the end of April 1916, and was used until October. From April 1917 to March 1918 it was very largely an artillery burial ground. After the war, more graves were brought in from the surrounding countryside. The British extension was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
