About

Delville Wood was a tract of woodland, nearly 1 kilometre square, the western edge of which touched the village of Longueval and was the scene of fierce fighting during the 1916 Battle of the Somme. Delville Wood Cemetery was made after the Armistice, when graves were brought in from around 10 small cemeteries and isolated sites, and from the battlefields. Almost all of the burials date from July, August and September 1916. The cemetery was designed by Sir Herbert Baker.

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
