About

The Memorial inside St Mary Magdelene Church commemorates four men from the village who died in the First World War. But the spelling of one name is wrong. George Avory Moore is actually George Avery Moor. There's also a question surrounding Herbert Neale. The CWGC lists a Herbert Neal (without an "e") and says he came from Whissendine. But no Neal appears on that village's War Memorial. It could be that Herbert Neale is the same person. Any more information gratefully accepted.

Do you know something about Essendine (St Mary Magdelene Church) that hasn't been mentioned?

Rutland and The Battle of the Somme

More than 90 Rutland soldiers died in the Battle of the Somme which lasted from 1 July 1916 until the middle of November. Today they lie in cemeteries across the old battlefield in northern France or are remembered among the 72,000 names on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme. By using our interactive map, you can find out what happened to them.
